Reconstruction work began on Saturday and should be completed within the next three to four days. The iconic Southernmost Point buoy that marks the 90 miles to Cuba in Key West began to be repaired after it was vandalized on January 1 by two people who set fire to a discarded Christmas tree in front of the monument.A spokeswoman for the Key West Police Department, Florida, said that the reconstruction work began the previous Saturday. She also pointed out that the work should be ready in the next three or four days, according to the report of the Local 10 channel. The authorities also reported that they already know the identity of the two people who committed the crime against the famous buoy, although they preferred not to reveal their names to the press, to protect the result of the investigation.Likewise, she revealed that no arrests have yet been made in the case, for which the law enforcement requested that anyone with information about the event contact the Department. The act against the famous monument took place on January 1, sometime between 3:00 and 3:30 in the morning. The suspects placed the Christmas tree right in front of the reinforced concrete buoy and set it on fire, so the damage was significant. The flames charred sections of the four-ton monolith, which reads "90 miles to Cuba, southernmost point, continental US."The two perpetrators of the fire were recorded on a security camera from the local marketing company Two Oceans Digital. In 2017, the buoy also suffered severe damage after the powerful hurricane Irma passed through the Florida Keys.At that time it was also repaired, as was the adjacent plaque dedicated to the hundreds of Cuban rafters who have lost their lives in the Straits of Florida in search of a dream of freedom. The monument is 12 feet tall and 7 feet wide and is maintained by the Key West Department of Public Works. It was inaugurated in 1983, 18 meters above sea level. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the area.Do you have something to report?Write to CyberCuba:Like you, thousands of Cubans in Spain in the United States in Mexico in Canada read and support the independent journalism of CiberCuba. Our editorial independence begins with our economic independence: no organization from any country finances CyberCuba. We make our own agenda, we publish our opinions and we give a voice to all Cubans, without external influences. Our newspaper has been financed until today only through advertising and own funds, but that limits what we can do.This is why we ask for your help.Your financial contribution will allow us to do more investigative journalism actions and increase the number of collaborators who report from the island, while maintaining our editorial independence.Any contribution, big or small, will be very valuable for our future. From only $5 and with just one minute of your time you can collaborate with CiberCuba.Thanks.This website uses its own and third-party cookies to improve the user experience, collect statistics to optimize functionality and display advertising tailored to your interests.More information about our privacy policy.
